Transforming a roll of wallpaper into a permanent, high-end feature on a round Kohler vessel sink requires digital magic, precise handiwork, and a kiln. This is how I turned the client’s favorite canine pattern into a custom statement piece for their new powder room..
The project began with the dog-themed wallpaper sample. First, I scanned the design at low resolution and printed it out on my laser printer to test fit on the basin.
Working with a curved, three-dimensional object like a round vessel sink required repeating the pups. That repetition helps the rhythm look balanced and natural around the basin’s circular edge. This approach suits a custom dog sink.

Printing Ceramic Decals with SDI Custom Decal
With the digital file locked in, I sent the artwork off to SDI Custom Decal, specialists in turning digital designs into professional water slide ceramic decals.
Unlike regular paper prints, these specialized over-glaze transfers carry ceramic pigments formulated to melt and bond directly with a fired glaze surface under high heat.
Applying the Decal to the Kohler Sink
Applying a flat decal onto a round, sloping vessel sink takes a steady hand and patience:
- I cut the decal sections and submerged them in warm water until the paper released the film.
- I carefully slid and positioned the wet dog motif onto the clean, glazed surface of the Kohler sink.
- Using a soft rubber squeegee and old towels, I work out the excess water from beneath the film. Any hidden moisture causes blistering in the kiln and a big mess.
- I let the sink dry completely for 24 hours before I put it in the kiln and check it over 3 times for any bubbles in the decals
Firing in the Kiln
The sink went into the kiln for a slow over-glaze firing, reaching the precise cone temperature required to melt the ceramic pigments permanently into the existing glaze.
When the kiln cooled and opened, the dogs were locked in forever—scratch-proof, fade-proof, and glossy. After a final safety and quality inspection, I packed the custom dog sink securely and shipped it off to the interior designer, ready for final bathroom installation. Fortunately they were kind enough to send me these fantastic photos of the gorgeous job they did on the bathroom.
